Q&A: wheres a good place to get a computer desk?

Question by Danger-Zone: wheres a good place to get a computer desk?
What's a good store to get a good quality computer desk for cheap that will hold stuff in draws with or without one of those tall shelves. Something that will obviously hold either a laptop or a desktop so like a place for the desktop computer part in or on the desk. So just tell me or send me links where you got your desk and P.S. I live in Canada so please no American stores, so what desk should I get?

Best answer:

Answer by George H
Well I'm not sure about Canada...but Bush makes some nice stuff...if you have Staples, or Office Max they would be there too. Any "office furniture" store should have a good selection. We have a place called "furn-a-kit" (similar to Ikea) which is a "kit" of desks you have to assemble. I found plastic "under the counter" draw units...great for files..light weight..on wheels..cheap! at Staples. Since my "office" is a converted closet, I made my own desk to fit the room!

Help! I need design advice for my home office.

Question by On a cloudy day: Help! I need design advice for my home office.
Okay, so i have a really boring cluttered home office and i really need help. It has white walls (blech) and a lot of black and dark cherry wood furniture. I really would like to keep with the cherry wood.

Unfortunately i have a bland, uncomfortable futon (blue "mattress" with black "supports") that i can't get rid of. I also cannot get rid of the large map of town and the large high school class pictures displayed on the wall. (though i would appreciate some help on how to display them, right now its pretty much one, then below, another...)

Anyone have any ideas for wall color ( i REALLY need help with that) and what i can do about the futon and what i should do about the wall displays and etc?

Right now my home office is very cold, bland and unattractive-looking. I really want to soften it up while keeping the pieces i already have (2 end tables, 2 desks, a book shelf, all in dark cherry wood. Also the futon, though it seriously needs help).

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Get a dark brown futon COVER for the futon, paint the walls crimson, get some vanilla votive and candles and put them in brushed metal, tall holders. Have fun!

Where can i find good office furniture online?

Question by beevocal: Where can i find good office furniture online?

Answer by Philip Edward
There are a handful of good websites out there but shipping prices usually get you. Sometimes its best to check locally. When i opened up a new office about a year ago I found an office furniture store that really worked with me and helped pick out furniture that complimented the space as well as fit the budget. I had gone to two other local stores to compare pricing and they were the lowest but very professional. They told me they have a website too but i did not check the ship prices : )

There are a few ways, depending on whats available locally:

One is to use stick on window tinting for cars. put it on the inside, and make sure not to have any lights in your office pointed at the window.

Also, you may be able to find a similar product, but meant for south-facing windows on your home. Its partially silvered and helps reflect UV and sunlight to keep your home cool.

If there are any live-action theatres, or movie studios around, pay a visit and ask to talk to someone who does set construction. you may be able to buy/trade/find out where to buy a ‘filter' or ‘gel' which you could affix to the inside for this effect. Something black but still fairly see-through applied to the inside should work. Anyone who does set construction will probably have a good suggestion from available materials, these guys are masters of illusion, and making do with whats at hand.

A cheaper, but much more unreliable method is to get silver spray paint, and holding the can about 8 inches further from the window than recommended on the can, do a very light coat on the office side of the glass. Repeat until the ‘silvering' is to your liking.

also, 3'x3′ isn't too big, you may be able to find a piece of partially silvered (one-way mirror) glass at a used/recycled glass retailer. These places usually advertise glass for railings around desks and for countertops, bu they often have a good selection of many kinds of frosted, mirror, or silvered glass.

It's a longshot, but you can always check freecycle and see if anyone is trying to get rid some office furniture. If there is, then it'll be free if you go get it.

How can I make my rooms to look more mature and cool (unique)?

Question by zig: How can I make my rooms to look more mature and cool (unique)?
I love it when I go visit people and they have their house all decorated neat modern and mature looking. I am 40 single male living on one single family home. I try to keep house inside and out side simple and clean look. I like the decoration of some nice apartment leasing office interiors or nice hotels. They do not have much, but nice hanging pictured walls and furniture around that goes well with their room. My rooms are not messy, but rather well organized, yet I just cant not seems to put it all together. Any tips on interior decorating? (I would not like the idea of hiring an interior decorator, I would like to learn to do it myself at minim cost / minimum living style).

Try painting your main room a light creme colour (but not white) with the wall opposite the main windows a dark chocolate brown. Get a sofa cover (or a new sofa) in a dark blacky brown colour, line that main sofa parallel to the feature wall… With your other seats, get them a sandy white/creme colour somehow and line them up so everything in square and straight. Get a big, dark wooden coffee table (big big) and slap it in the middle. Get a matching smaller table to put next to the sofa or chairs… Keep one of your existing table lights, but get a massive round, silver or glitzy or shiny sort of lamp shade and put that on the smaller table… Get a big vase or big glass bowl and put it in the middle of the big table. Do dark curtains or blinds, dark rug or carpet and small bits and bobs to go around the room that are shiny, metalic and useless… Try to keep the rest of the furniture dark and as low as possible. For pictures, go with very simple prints or posters in simple dark wooden frames, one big one of that feature wall is always really nice.

As for the rest of the house, keep it simple, keep it very plain and introduce colour or glamour in the accessories. Keep it low… Hope this helps!

Post them on eBay, Craigslist, make flyers and post them in your local super markets, place an ad in your newspaper's classifieds section that you are selling these items.

Any suggestions on how to build a curved wall?

Question by Dreamlander: Any suggestions on how to build a curved wall?
I am in process of building a home office and have decided to implement a curved wall to the front, interior area. The radius of the wall seems almost impossible to build because the 2X4's do not bend to that arc. My first thought was to cut the 2X4's and place them as such that they form an arc and then make the actual wall from paneling but I still think I will end up with more of a hexagon look that way.

Any suggestions would be great!

Best answer:

Answer by Richard E
Frame wall with 2x4s as close to radius as possible (your first thought) depending on radius you may want to space studs as close as 12” apart. You can achieve radius in floor and top plates by dividing radius into equal degrees and cutting angles to match. Then, attach 1×4 horizontally across studs at 2′ spacing starting at base of wall. 1x4s will bend to curvature and give solid backing for sheet rock or paneling. If 1x4s do not give desired radius use 1/2” thick plywood strips if using sheet rock use 3/8” thick sheets and install 8′ length on horizontal.

Q&A: help with office furniture?

Question by Emma M: help with office furniture?
My computer chair has decided that when i sit on it to slow drop down to lowest height without handle for movement touched. I think its gas-filled any way of repairing or sorting it out without buying a new one or not.

Best answer:

Answer by Tim
If it is a more expensive chair you could contact the manufacturer to see about replacing the gas strut. More than likely, it is time for a new chair.
